Most Buddhist philosophical schools agree on the way that karmic imprints are created, but opinions differ about where they are based. Some scholars use the word stored for imprints, but I feel this gives some sort of sense that they are a physical entity. They are not physical entities, and there is no physical area where we might find them.

Our mental actions leave both long-term and short-term propensities on the mindstream. Most schools assert that long-term imprints are based only on the mental consciousness, which has the attribute of continuing day by day, year by year, and life by life, whereas short-term imprints can be based on the sense consciousnesses such as the eye and ear consciousness, and so forth.
